With Mariano Rivera ending his season with an ACL tear, it's interesting to note that, at age 42 and possibly not coming back, Rivera ranks number 1 in career ERA (2.21) for pitching with a minimum of 1,000 innings.  Reliever or not, that's impressive.  Here's hoping Rivera rehabs and comes back next year, but if not, there hasn't been a more dominant AND consistent reliever in my lifetime.

It seems like every year many prognosticators pick Kansas City as an "up and coming" team, citing young talent and offering the possibility of a strong finish, this year likely behind Detroit but with division title possibilities.  Puh-lease.  As expected, the Royals are 3-9, 0-6 at home, and you can expect the so-called "young talent" to perform at an average level while the pitching staff is laughable - when Bruce Chen is the "ace," anything north of last place will be a gift.

On a positive note, congrats to Jamie Moyer for becoming the oldest pitcher to win a game in MLB history the other night against the San Diego Padres (yes, it still counts even against the Padres).  Moyer (age 49+) earned his way into the Rockies rotation and should be commended, but the suggestions that he is now a Hall of Famer (268 wins and counting) is laughable.  Longevity is certainly an enviable trait, especially from a starting pitcher, but toeing the mound for decades simply isn't enough to be considered elite, and little else that Moyer has done in his career suggests elite status.  However, Moyer will have an invitation to the Hall of Good when I get around to creating it.  Harold Baines, Mike Morgan, Javy Lopez, and Edgar Renteria can expect something in the mail as well.

It's been a relatively normal start to the season with very few rainouts, but one unusual play happened in yesterday's game between the Padres and the Dodgers when LA executed the not-so-typical 2-5-6-3 triple play.  It was the first time since 1950 that a 2-5-6-3 triple play has occurred and the first time EVER that it occurred with outs at third, second, and first base.

The play which began with an unintentional hit as Jesus Guzman tried to pull a bunt attempt back as the ball hit the bat caused controversy due to the home plate umpire raising his hands in the air as if to signal a foul ball.  Instead, it appears that Dale Scott (the umpire) was trying to get out of the way and get a decent view, raising his arms slightly in the process.  In any event, the Dodgers played it out and the Padres didn't, so LA ends up with a unique triple play to add to their history.  You can view the play at MLB.com.

Need further confusion?  It was Jackie Robinson Day, so every player, coach, and umpire is walking around with a "42" on their backs or arm sleeves, adding just one more oddity to the rarest of plays.

If a tree falls in a forest... yeah, you know the rest.  Well, that's what the opener in Japan felt like for most of the baseball world when Seattle and Oakland played the first regular season games of 2012 over the past couple days.  Nobody cared, but that doesn't mean this won't be a great MLB season.  Despite Bud Selig's attempts to cheapen the regular season with a ONE(?!!?) game playoff, there is still plenty to like and plenty to root for in 2012.

Before the "real" Opening Day approaches, take a look at TCO's Season Preview and get yourself up-to-date on what teams figure to be fighting it out in October!  Check it out now!

What's in a name?
Before you start preparing for your fantasy draft, there are a few names and name changes you should know.  For starters, Fausto Carmona's real name is Roberto Hernandez, and he might even be available to draft if things go in the right direction.  Whether you want to draft him or not is up to you.  Next, the Marlins former closer Leo Nunez is now Juan Carlos Oviedo.  He's currently stuck in the Dominican Republic sorting out his false identity issues.  Lastly, star outfielder Mike Stanton is now to be known as Giancarlo Stanton.  This is not a case of fraudulent identity, however.  Stanton's real name is Giancarlo Cruz Michael Stanton, and he claims it was just easier to let everyone call him Mike.  Now he simply wants to be called Giancarlo.  No problem, as long as you keep hitting home runs for your fantasy owners.

Wow.  I have to admit, as solid as Yadier Molina is, I certainly never considered him a "franchise-type player," but those are the exact words used by St. Louis Chairman Bill Dewitt Jr. when referring to Molina and his newly minted $75 million contract covering the next five years.  Added incentives could make the deal worth $90 over seven years, and keep in mind that Molina is already a 29-year-old catcher.  So as smart as the Cardinals brass typically operates, it's worth noting that they wouldn't step up and pay Pujols $240 - $250 million over 10 years (which is admittedly above market value), but they WILL pay a middle aged catcher at least $75 million as he heads into his 30s.

Is it wrong?  Not necessarily.  St. Louis did offer Albert $200 million, and at some point you have to cut bait.  With the money they were willing to spend on Pujols, they can now spend it on others (Berkman, Beltran, Molina, etc.).  Superstars are essential to success, but the risk is that one tweaked knee by Pujols will be devastating for Anaheim (LA), while St. Louis can now afford to build depth.  In baseball, both methods can work, but a little luck and a lot of hard work is needed in both situations.
